Students majoring in biology can obtain a secondary teaching certificate to teach biology/life science in grades 8-12. Students also have the option of taking just 8 additional hours to obtain a science composite certification which would allow them to teach all sciences at the high school level. Students in biology are encouraged to select the Bachelor of Science in Biology degree program.
Biology Teacher Certification Degree Plan
The biology teacher certification degree plan intends to make the best possible use of core curriculum, free electives, and upper level biology electives thereby including all of the certification requirements into the degree plan. While it does not allow for many free electives to be chosen by the student, it does incorporate all requirements for the degree and teacher certification.
This degree plan is for catalog 130 - applicable to students entering Texas A&M University in 2007-2008 academic year. If another catalog applies to you, please see the MASS Coordinator or your academic advisor for the degree plan appropriate for your catalog.
Biology (Life Science) Teaching Field Plan
Most commonly called a "field plan”, this document will be submitted to the College of Education upon admittance into the professional phase of teacher certification (typically in the sophomore year). These courses are included in your degree plan and are those courses specifically required by the state for you to be a certified teacher.
Science Composite Teaching Field Plan
The science composite teaching field plan, similar to the biology field plan, incorporates the additional 8 hours required for composite science teacher certification.
If you are not a biology major and want to teach biology or life sciences at the high school level, please contact the aggieTEACH Program Coordinator to discuss your options.
